ViralListMachine - List Building In The 21st Century

Version 1.04 Released - Assets Working When Installed In Subdirectory & More

I have just released version 1.04 of the ViralListMachine which fixes some bugs and introduces a new easy update installation system for future updates. You’ll notice a new button “Updates” in the admin area.

Changes

  • Bugfix: Only “virallistmachine_” was possible as database table prefix
  • Bugfix: Assets did not work when VLM was installed in a subdirectory
  • Bugfix: Security improvement in the admin area: main database settings can only be changed if a) the system has not yet been setup (unchanged) and b) the system has already been setup and the admin is logged in (new)
  • New Feature: New “Updates” section in admin area for easy installation of future updates

You can download the update here – but please make sure you’ve updated to version 1.03 first!

If you’d rather have a fresh install just login here and download version 1.04.

  • Hi,
it seems you have made an awesome job here.

However there’s one feature that does exist on the GKLM 2.0 software, which is dynamic generation of passwords.

The less information we ask people to enter, the more conversions we will get.

Is there a way for the software to generate a simple “user friendly” password ?
    (eg. vowel-consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel-consonant )

  • Thanks for your feedback! Oh, there is a GKLM 2.0 software, interesting. I heard that Frank would maybe release something like that with the ListControl course but didn’t know yet that it really exists ;) This is not possible with the VLM right now but I’m working on it.

Do you have a timeframe of when you’re going to implement the password retrieval for members? I don’t know how to retrieve them for people and they get really irritated that they have to re-register with another e-mail address and start over again just because they forget their password.

  • It’s impossible to retrieve passwords because only encrypted (one-way) password hashes are stored in the database for security reasons.
So the only option is to create a new password for the user which for security reasons should only be sent to his email address and never be directly displayed on the website. Thus it is required to send a new email to the user containg the password.

Ths means the following has to be done:
    - implement the “lostPassword” page
    - allow editing of the page in the admin area on the content page
    - allow customization of the email that’s being sent (emails page in admin area) – because you may be legally bound to include your address etc.

This feature will definetly be included in the PRO version of the VLM. I’m planning to implement this feature in VLM1 as well within the next few days but I can’t give you any specific date. Donating some amount might decrease the time until it is available ;)

    I’ve donated to you already.

Thanks the lost password feature is going to be great. Are you also going to be including the computer generated passwords in V1 or is that only going to be in V2?

    Thanks

I am unable to instal another version of Viral List Machine on my servier. I keep getting the error:

    Sorry, An Error Occurred!
Unable to connect to the database server “localhost”. The server replied: “Access denied for user ‘virallistmachine’@'localhost’ (using password: YES)”

Can you please explain why this is happening?

  • Steve M

To be clear, you said you could setup multiple list machine programs on your server and use the same MySQL database. But when I uploaded it to another domain on my server I get the error message above.

  • Did you unpack the original ZIP file to another domain on your server?
In that case the first thing you’d see if you open up the domain in your browser is the database configuraiton page.
The error message should not occur because you’ve not yet setup the database.
    Are you using version 1.04a?

  • Version 1.04a worked. I was using 1.04. Thanks.

Now looking forward to that computer generating password version.
